What Is BOTOX®?

BOTOX® is a purified protein that is designed to be injected into the muscles. Thoroughly studied in scientific research, BOTOX® is generally safe with relatively few potential side effects. The way it works is relatively simple. Upon injection, the chemical will enter into the muscle and attach to the motor nerve endings. This will inhibit muscle contraction and result in a smooth appearance. Since the motor unit is the only part of the muscle treated with BOTOX®, the process is painless.
Who Is a Good Candidate for BOTOX®?

BOTOX is a great cosmetic option for patients wanting to eliminate wrinkles and highlight their natural facial features. Here are some examples of the types of aesthetic issues BOTOX can address:
- Crow’s feet
- Lines between the eyebrows
- Forehead creases
- Lines at the corner of the mouth
The Benefits of BOTOX®

Facial wrinkles are inevitable. Chewing, smiling, frowning, and squinting eventually change and fatigue the muscles around your jaw, eyes, and lips. The resulting folds in your skin can make you appear older, tired, or even angry. BOTOX® treatments help relax your muscles, enhancing your natural charm and lending your skin a rejuvenated appearance. The best part? This is a quick, nonsurgical cosmetic option that won’t make you appear “stiff” or “artificial”!
Why See a Dentist for BOTOX®?

Many people find it odd that their dentist provides BOTOX® treatments. The truth is that dentists are one of the most educated healthcare professionals when it comes to the soft tissues, muscles, and nerves of the face. You can consider them your smile expert, not just for your teeth, but for your facial aesthetics as well!
BOTOX® FAQs
Is BOTOX® Safe?
BOTOX® treatments use low concentrations of botulinum toxin that are perfectly safe as long as they are administered by a qualified medical professional such as Dr. Weldon, and some research suggests that cosmetic BOTOX® treatments may be especially safe since the concentrations used are especially small. However, you may experience adverse effects after BOTOX® treatment if it is performed by an unqualified individual. During the first fourteen years after BOTOX® was approved by the Food and Drug Administration, only 36 adverse reactions were reported, and many of them were due to underlying medical conditions rather than the treatment itself.
Is BOTOX® Permanent?
The results of BOTOX® treatments are not permanent, and this is part of why the procedure is considered incredibly safe. The effects of the procedure can last about three to six months, and the treatment can be safely readministered as needed to maintain the patient’s results. How long your results last will depend on a variety of factors such as how old you are, your metabolism, how much exercise you get, and how much you are exposed to direct sunlight and environmental toxins. You may be able to extend the results of your BOTOX® treatment with methods like limiting how much strenuous physical activity you get and avoiding excessive sun exposure.
How Can I Prolong My BOTOX® Results?
You may be able to make the results of your BOTOX® treatment last longer if you take measures like:
- Avoiding sun damage: BOTOX® is not effective against wrinkles caused by sun exposure since they are not caused by muscle movements. Excessive sunlight also causes an inflammatory response that can cause the botulinum toxin to break down faster.
- Sticking to low-intensity exercise: High-intensity exercise will raise your metabolic rate, which will encourage the BOTOX® protein to break own faster.
- Minding your stress levels: Stressing out can cause tension in your facial muscles that causes new wrinkles, and it can also encourage inflammatory responses that can break down the botulinum toxin.
- Using moisturizer: Keeping your skin moist with a product that contains collagen and hyaluronic acid can help your skin stay plump, healthy, and resilient.
- Abstain from nicotine: Nicotine, the addictive drug in tobacco, can accelerate the deterioration of the collagen your skin needs to stay healthy. Smoking and vaping can also cause fine lines around the mouth that BOTOX® injections cannot address.
- Consider taking a zinc supplement: One study found that people who received BOTOX® injections tended to enjoy longer-lasting results if they took a 50-milligram zinc supplement daily.
We’ll be happy to help you understand the best ways to maintain your BOTOX® results when you see you at our office in Ocala.
