How Dental Insurance Works

When you use dental insurance to pay for your oral health care, you can typically expect your provider to pay for treatment with the following structure:

  • 100% of your costs for two exams and cleanings annually.
  • 80% of the total for “minor” dental procedures.
  • 50% of the total for “major” dental procedures.

In most cases, dental insurance does not cover what is considered “aesthetic” dentistry treatments, or those that fall under the category of cosmetic dentistry. However, they will sometimes offer partial coverage if the treatment has oral health benefits, such as a tooth-colored restoration or veneer to protect a damaged tooth.

Additionally, some plans may even offer some orthodontic coverage, but in most cases you must select this option during open enrollment and pay an additional fee.

For PPO coverage, you are typically subject to a deductible, annual maximum and possibly a waiting period for new enrollments; however, these plans allow you the flexibility to visit whichever dentist you’d like without restriction. Conversely, HMO plans have very few terms, but you can only use your coverage at a participating dentist for your provider to pay your claim.

With dental insurance, you pay a small monthly fee known as a premium in exchange for your provider's coverage. Generally, the higher your premium, the greater your coverage and the lower your out-of-pocket costs will be.

What Is the Difference Between Dental & Medical Insurance?

Although both help bring down the cost of treatment, dental and medical insurance are inherently quite different. While dental insurance emphasizes preventive care, medical insurance is typically used to help offset the cost of unexpected issues.

Thus, the best way to get the most out of your investment with dental insurance is to maintain a schedule of regular dental checkups and cleanings every six months. By doing this, you’ll lower your risk of needing restorations and emergency care, saving you even more money along with your natural teeth!
